She was born in Zonguldak, in 1966. She completed her middle and high school education at TED (Turkish Education Association) Zonguldak College. She graduated from Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine at İstanbul University in 1990. In the same year, she started her Neurology Specialty in Neurology Department at İstanbul University. She worked as a “researcher” in Sleep Disorders Center of Neurology Department at Montpellier University in France between 1993 and 1994. She published her thesis, which she had been conducting there about “Restless Legs Syndrome and Periodic Movement Disorder during Sleep,” at Montpellier University and in international medical journals. She obtained the diploma of “Diplome Inter Universitaire du Sommeil et de L’eveil (Interuniversity Diploma of Sleep and Wakefulness)”, which is valid in European countries, within the period when she was in France. In 1995, she actively worked in three research projects of “hypersomnia-excessive sleepiness” in Sleep Disorders Centre at Stanford University in USA. She became Neurology Specialist in Neurology Department of Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine at İstanbul University in 1996, became Associate Professor in 2001, and became Professor in 2007 in the same university. In 2011, she obtained Clinical Neurophysiology Subspecialty in Turkey. In 2013, she won the title of European Sleep “Expert” as well as European Specialist of Sleep Medicine in Europe.
She has actively taken office at Turkish Sleep Medicine Society since its foundation. She held the presidency of Turkish Sleep Medicine Society between 2011 and 2013. She is a member of International Restless Legs Syndrome Working Group and European Restless Legs Syndrome Working Group.
She is the board member of Turkish Sleep Medicine Society. She is also the member of Turkish Neurological Society, Turkish Chapter of International League against Epilepsy, Clinical Neurophysiology EEG-EMG Society, European Sleep Research Society, American Academy of Sleep Medicine, World Association of Sleep Medicine, and Asian Sleep Research Society. She has been working especially on Sleep Disorders in her practical and academic career. She has dozens of articles on sleep and its disorders published in national and international medical journals. Furthermore, she has written many chapters on sleep in national and international books. She is still the Medical Director of Sleep Disorders Unit in Neurology Department of Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine. She has been following the latest developments on Sleep and its Disorders, and continuing to provide training on this subject both across the country and internationally.
